4 Types Of Stop Motion Videos

Aug 30, 2022 | Stop Motion, Videography | 0 comments

I’ve been getting into stop motion video animation these days. It’s super fun, and a playful way to tell a story or show off a product.

Here are 4 techniques that I’ve tried so far in the studio. Which one is your favorite?

The Point Stop Motion

If you have a lot of different options or types of a certain product, the “point” is a great way to show them all off.

Miss Mustard Seed’s® MilkPaint™ has lots of different wax types, so I thought this technique would be a fun way to display them.

The Expansion

MMS MilkPaint™’s new formula is plant-based, non-toxic, eco-friendly, compostable and biodegradable. I wanted to create a stop motion that would emphasize those characteristics. So, I went out into the garden and picked some leaves, fern fronds and flowers. I positioned them in such a way that they looked like they were growing out of the bag!

This one took quite a while to create, but it was worth it in the end!

The Doodle Stop Motion

In the “doodle” stop motion, you draw a shape, write out a word or make a pattern with the product. I’ve got loads of ideas on videos to make in this style, but for now, here’s one I came up with using MilkPaint™ powder in Flow Blue:

To make this one rotate, I turned the entire table in a circle while I took my photos. In hindsight, I think I would re-do how I pivoted the table, but it was adorable for a first attempt!

The Instructional

This one is exactly what it sounds like – instructional. These are your how-to types of videos. For my practice video, I created a how-to mix MMS MilkPaint™ sequence.

The hardest part of this stop motion was the mixing part. You have to stir MilkPaint™ for a good couple of minutes before it all comes together, and it would have taken forever to take photos to show that entire process. So I decided to shorten it up and skip a few frames.

There are so many other stop motion formats I want to try. My brain is literally going haywire with all of the possibilities! I guess that’s a good sign that creativity is firing on all cylinders, eh?
