Ugly Betty was (literally and figuratively) a HUGE addition to our home office. She’s about 7 feet tall and I was able to fit all of my “craft crap” inside.
But let’s face it…when you first get married, and you combine all of your stuff together, and you live in an apartment, you need storage.
Lots of storage.
Enter the need for storage cabinet #2. I snagged her from a local Facebook yard sale site. Luckily, the owner lives a few minutes down the road, so this was a pretty easy pickup (unlike our “new” couch we just picked up, which was an hour away. The ride was scenic, so it wasn’t too painful…well…until we moved it up a flight of stairs. I digress…)
This piece is actually a Bassett Furniture TV cabinet. I decided to narrow my storage search to TV cabinets because they seem to be in abundance and they’re just the right shape for our office – taller than they are wide. Cupboards were coming up too expensive or too far away, and I didn’t want a bookshelf because I’d like to be able to keep our stuff behind closed doors. This cabinet came with 2 shelves that can be inserted inside and 2 deep drawers.
After my wonderful husband and father-in-law lugged it up the stairs, I set to work cleaning it out and taking it apart. I removed the power strip inside and took the back off that had the TV cutout.
Many staples later…
the cabinet was backless, doorless, knobless, and drawerless.
There were some decent knots on the cabinet, and you could see some of the resin that had seeped to the surface. I know from past experience that those cause bleed through eventually, so I grabbed my primer and sealed those bad boys up before I began painting.
You can kind of see the resin seeping through on the spot to the left. I did two thick coats to make sure my paint job would last. This stage was kind of funny because it looked like the cabinet had chicken pox or mosquito bites all over it.
I decided to paint it in Annie Sloan’s “Duck Egg”.
I’ve got one coat on and I’m shopping for new knobs. I can’t decide between glass or white.
What do you think?
