Tough Coat is a water-based polyurethane that has a matte sheen. Tough coat provides extra durability against general wear and tear, water damage and food stains. This finish is perfect for those high-traffic surfaces such as table tops, seating, doors and floors. It’s also the perfect sealer to lock in chipping paint, whether it’s the original paint on a piece or Miss Mustard Seed’s. (Note: Always follow the EPA’s guidelines for lead based paint.) This product has easy soap and water clean up!
Because Tough Coat has a matte sheen, it can look cloudy over dark and rich colors, like Artissimo, Typewriter and Tricycle. We suggest using Hemp Oil or Wax finishes for those colors instead.
This product is non-yellowing in lab tests, although you should always test when applying over light colors with no primer underneath. Water based topcoats attract tannins (wood oils) and can pull them through Milk Paint if a stain-blocking primer was not used as a base coat. It doesn’t always happen, but you may want to test first to ensure no bleed-through will occur.
How to Apply Tough Coat:
Apply with a synthetic bristle brush or a roller. Watch for drips and do not over-work. Simply apply, smooth out and leave the product alone to dry hard. Tough Coat is an interior only finish and is not suitable for outdoor use.
If applying on a recently painted surface, allow the paint to dry 24-36 hours before applying Tough Coat to avoid trapping moisture and causing a cloudy finish. For maximum durability, apply two coats waiting 2-4 hours between coats. In humid climate, longer drying times may be required.
